Theseus, son of promiscuous god-king Zeus beheading Medusa, the titan, one of the old gods. I have yet to see piece of art that more accurately depicts the rise of the followers masculine sky god, literally killing off the earth goddess worshipers and beginning the brutal descent into patriarchy. The Greeks were not the only ones to tell this tragic tale. The bible tells of a garden where woman and man lived in harmony with each other and with nature—before a male god decreed that woman henceforth be subservient to man. The Chinese Tao Te Ching describes a time when the yin,or feminine principle was not yet ruled by the male principle, or yang, a time when the wisdom of the mother was still honored and followed above all. Schools still teach that theFertile Crescent was the “cradle of civilization” and that we have always had a social caste system. It was not always this way, we did not always glorify violence, we did not always have the poor and rich, the servant and the master, the idea that one race is better than the other, and this concept that one sex must be dominant over the other. Civilization was much more civil, and the earth was not seen as a resource to be spent or a wild beast to be domesticated.
